“We all have something to hide, some dark place inside us we don’t want the world to see. So we pretend everything’s okay, wrapping ourselves in rainbows — and maybe that’s all for the best — because some of these places are darker than others.”
This mysterious tone is none other than Dexter’s! This sixth episode in the series shows Dexter hovering over the degree of impact Rita’s death has had on Harrison’s life (his biological son).
“I want to believe that smile,” he continues, looking at Harrison. “That watching your mother die hasn’t changed you the way it changed me.”
Really isn’t it the same question we are relentlessly wondering about since the previous season’s ending? With Harrison in the same pool of blood as Dexter had once been in. Over and over again throughout all the seasons. Damn those flashbacks. History might well repeat itself or not?
Adding to the complexities in Dexter’s so-called normal psycho-serial killer life this season, is Julia Stiles. Shes an amazing choice to be portraying such a new disoriented character, especially in this series. Season 5 certainly has had a twisted start! Leaving aside the crazy on going head-on-a-platter machete killings investigation, Dexter has been keeping busy elsewhere.
Dexter’s encounter with Julia as Lumen is mind boggling! She is well the only still-living witness to one of Dexter’s killings. Hell yeah! She actually saw him do the deed. Unlike Lila who never witnessed it but had to deal with his torment in company with ‘The Dark Passenger’. Nothing to compare with Rita too as she only ever knew the one mask of goodness Dexter wore around her, which became a usual habit. Somehow even though I never liked Rita much, her absence is just weird like there’s no one to go home to. Yes, theres the bachelor pad which they all share now. Then again with Astor and Cody’s departure, wonder when we’ll see them again?
Thankfully we have Deb’s ongoing slangs of work related issues, Masuka’s vulgar jokes plus the supremely weird laughter and also the trails of the Trinity case. I am also very eager to see what Julia’s character will develop into. Yes Julia, since having Dexter is weird enough and now they have Dexter-Lumen combo which is just bizarre but hey that’s Dexter!

Now, we all know Dexter works alone. So accomplice is out of the question. Yeah we know how well that worked out the last time. So would a minor side-kick work out now? Better still, the way Dexter choses his mates: all emotionally destroyed, damaged just like him, yet balanced and stronger by the experience… Julia might well turn into that someone?! Lets not wonder that further off given the untested survival chances of the fresh Lumen? FTW I still prefer Julia
Looking at the world through Dexter’s eyes (when hes not mutilating puppies or not like a junkie for his next kill fix or dumping those bags in the sea) we see him categorizing the people around him in two. First category subdivided into a) the usual low minded scumbags who end up on his butcher table without a doubt b) the highly twisted minds like him who he can relate to, that being his creepy brother Brian Moser, Lila, Miguel and Trinity who inevitably end up on the table. Second set include Debra, Rita and the children who all represent feelings and emotions, he preserves as human.
5 Reasons to watch Season 5 of Dexter?
- It’s creepy as any other previous Dexter seasons.
- Julia Stiles addition as Lumen! Future side-kick? You bet!
- Dark sarcasm from Dexter, improved funny Masuka & not emotionally torn Debra.
- Trinity trails dug up by Quinn, might land him an exit soon
Just not sure how soon
- Best part: Dex doesn’t know yet about Quinn’s involvement
No, Harrison is still a mystery
Whew writing about Dexter fandom is about the craziest topics I could choose to contemplate over. Since, the appeal towards Dexter is of a strange dimension. Yes, the sane 2.6 million of the population do watch it! In fact it’s something totally different from what we are likely to ever be. Being completely void of any emotion or feeling is who we know ‘Dexter’ as. Its an accepted fact that this isn’t likely to ever change, yes evolve over time but never change dramatically. Yet the repeated squashing of that guy after his wife’s death was as Harry states ‘the humanest thing you have ever done Dex’ makes me think otherwise.
On the ending note, Why the whole LaGuerta-Batista drama? We have Dexter’s complications with Julia, Deb’s slight change of feelings for Quinn and the machete killings case to deal with rather than watch those two bickering! Hell even slimy Quinn’s actions evoke a reaction though more irritating than the very boring, less annoying Lieutenant-Sergeant pair-up.
“Rainbows are an illusion, refracted light to make us think something is there when it’s really not,” Dexter says, as the episode ends. “Is there darkness in Harrison or is it my own fear being reflected back?”
This definitely concludes the fact that Dexter doesn’t necessarily have to commit his ‘Dark Passenger’ crimes every episode, rather just the very essence of him keeps the show’s drive on.
